A Surprising Block to Writing…and 3 Ways to Fix it Fast

Many of my clients face the same problem.  I had it for years too, but never knew.  The problem kept me going around in circles and stuck.  It wasn’t until I moved to Ecuador that I realized what was going on.

I was exhausted!  My life in St. Louis was very stressful.  I worked too much and slept too little.  It’s almost impossible to be creative and write from your heart when you are existing on grit and Diet Coke…even if you try really hard and stay at your computer for hours.

If you find yourself stuck, either in your writing or in your book marketing, one of the best things you can do to jumpstart your creativity is to rest and break up your normal routine.  Take a long weekend, or even a day, and get away from your computer out into nature.  Go on a hike, sit by a river, visit a state park, or walk in the woods.  Being surrounded by natural beauty will calm your mind and refresh your soul.

Then, pamper yourself just a bit.  Do something for yourself that feels indulgent and special as a reward for the hard work you have already completed on your book.

Finally, go to bed!  Give yourself some extra sleep and things will feel better in the morning.

Once you have given yourself this gift of time, rest, and beauty, turn to your journal.  Write for a bit on these questions:

  1. What do I like about what I have completed so far?
  2. What feels overwhelming?
  3. What fear lurks at the bottom of that feeling of overwhelm?
  4. How does exhaustion contribute to my sense of being stuck?
  5. How can I do this work in a way that feels good?

When you give yourself rest, beauty, and then some time for quiet reflection on the process of writing, you’ll be amazed at the new ideas and fresh inspiration that arrive.
